As your journey begins, you are greeted by a 10,000-year-old woolly mammoth. Follow the indoor “river” past a 7,000 gallon aquarium teaming with native Missouri river fishes. Wild animals abound as you pass a howling wolf. A beaver lodge blocks a creek and forms a habitat for many animals. Hear the calls of an eagle, coyote, katydid, and more. Learn about Missouri animals as you watch their tracks appear before you.
Stroll through time as you witness how civilization, from 10,000 BC to the turn of the 20th Century, has evolved and impacted nature. Talk a walk through time and witness a Paleo man flint knapping. As eras progress, you will find yourself among some of the first farmers in North America. Sit a spell and watch a video about the land in this area, the Sacred Hills. As you continue your trek through time, you will pass through a trader’s cabin and a trapper’s tent before taking a stroll down an 1800s St. Joseph main street.
Hear the train come into town and peer into the saloon. Before leaving town, stop by the theater and see a production about Western Migration, as it recounts the story of the California Gold Rush and journeys west to Oregon. Don’t forget to visit the Native American artifact room, where you will see over 1,200 artifacts that were unearthed right here in Northwest Missouri.
Outside you can see the Mighty MO (Missouri River). Enjoy a stroll down the riverwalk and view the Loess Hills Bluffs toward the east. Spend an afternoon identifying the native trees or wander through the gardens and take in the beautiful views that nature has to offer.
Make your experience complete with one of the many programs the Remington Nature Center of St. Joseph has to offer. Shop for that special token in the gift shop.
